HK ranked freest economy again
12-01-2011
Hong Kong has been ranked as the world's freest economy for the 17th straight year by the Heritage Foundation. The territory tops the index of economic freedom of 179 economies for this year, followed by Singapore. But a Director of the Foundation, Terry Miller, warned that Hong Kong's leading position may been threatened by the introduction of the statutory minimum wage later this year.
The Foundation also said Hong Kong will become an even freer economy if the government reduces its massive fiscal reserves. The Wall Street Journal, which jointly compiled the index with the Foundation, has criticised the government for holding onto the wealth of its people. It had called on the administration to return at least half of its about HK$500 billion reserves to the community.
