STOMPer Michael was shocked at the sight of more than 100 Work Permit (WP) holders lining up to open accounts at the POSB Account Services branch at Hong Lim Complex yesterday (July 26). There were only three counters available to tend to the crowd.
Michael elaborates:
"This was the sight that greeted me when I went to the POSB Account Services branch at Hong Lim Complex yesterday.
"According to POSB staff who were combing the crowd, the queue could be 50 persons deep.
"It has been like that since Feb 28 2011 when POSB decided to centralize account openings for the estimated 1 million Work Permit holders at Hong Lim Complex.
"It was obvious that the staff could not cope. The branch manager, Suhaida, who was manning one of the 3 counters, managed only a smile.
"There were only 3 counters open to attend to more than 100 applicants.
"Why couldn't POSB decentralise the application and collection of the account openings to its branches. I mean, the processing and approval could still be centralised. No one up in the management probably thought that was possible.
"Suhaida said: 'We are opening up to 10 counters by next month'.
"1 million new WP holders a year. What a waste of everyone's time.
