Temasek Holdings on Monday marked its 38th anniversary by unveiling an updated and simplified charter to reflect its three roles.

They are:

•Temasek is an active investor and shareholder;
•Temasek is a forward-looking institution;
• Temasek is a trusted steward.

The Singapore investment company first put out a charter in 2002, as a 'living document' to help define the institution and what it does, noted chief executive Ho Ching in an e-mail to staff on Monday.

Temasek managed a portfolio of assets worth $193 billion as of March 31 last year.

'We are a long-term investor. We have to think long term, be forward-looking and build an institution that invests not just for the current generation but for future generations as well,' said Mr Stephen Forshaw, Temasek's managing director of corporate affairs.

In her e-mail, Ms Ho said that as a forward-looking institution, Temasek is constantly searching to do things better, thinking ahead and ready to open new paths with the future in mind.

'We act with integrity and are committed to the pursuit of excellence, always with an eye for tomorrow, and knowing we can only be as good as our people,' she wrote. 'Put simply, we do things with tomorrow in mind.'
