綜合統計處及旅發局資料，內地湧港旅客在過去9年升逾兩倍，去年達2810萬人次，當中逾六成為自由行旅客（1834萬），較2003年初推自由行的人數大升26倍。這批內地客推動本港經濟增長，令入境遊佔本地生產總值的比例持續上升，由03年的1.7％升至09年的2.6％，當中零售業增長最多，由0.4％升至0.9％。
養活4.7％就業人口
同時，自由行增長亦帶來就業機會，截至09年，入境遊及相關消費行業就業人數達16.5萬，佔總就業人口的4.7％（見表）。
科技大學經濟系系主任雷鼎鳴分析，旅遊帶動的經濟增長以低技術勞工為主，故對本地生產總值影響不大，但對失業率影響較大，若失去自由行旅客，粗略推算現時失業率會升兩個百分點，即高逾5％。他又以09年入境遊佔本地生產總值2.6％推算，相信現有比例應為3％，如無自由行，這比例或跌1%。
根據統計處數據推算，現時每1個百分點失業率代表約3.5萬人失業。換言之，若沒有自由行，即會有7萬人失業。
然而，香港零售管理協會主席麥瑞琼坦言，內地客確令港人困擾，有港人已不喜歡去銅鑼灣及廣東道。「香港人都是人，都要購物，應想想如何增加本地對旅客的承受力。」
需處理自由行附帶損害
除了本地空間無法承受，港人情緒都開始承受不了。本報上周四至昨日透過電話音頻電腦系統，訪問了613人，結果顯示16%表示自己個人有受惠於自由行政策，不受惠者則有73%；至於對自由行旅客的感覺，30%表示「歡迎」，35％表示「抗拒」，無意見有35％。
香港理工大學社會政策研究中心主任鍾劍華分析，每3人有1人抗拒自由行，比例已算高，值得警惕。內地孕婦、不守秩序的遊客、旅客消費推高租金和物價，令港人不安，加上北大教授孔慶東及D&G事件火上加油，港人負面情緒在發酵，「現在大家情緒繃緊，抗拒感覺擴大了，漸演化成社群對立」。鍾劍華認為，自由行對本港的邊際效用已在遞減，政府須處理其附帶損害。
雷鼎鳴﹕市民難享自由行效益
雷鼎鳴相信，內地客對本港的效益大於損失，但令港人產生抗拒的兩大深層次矛盾，其一是內地經濟急速增長，令經濟有限的香港出現「前無去路、後有追兵」的感覺，其次本港土地不足，受惠於自由行的零售業都要交貴租，最受惠的是業主，普羅市民未必感受到旅客帶來的好處。
香港大學社會學系系主任呂大樂回應，調查分析需視乎受訪者的年齡及職業等背景，難以評論本報電話調查。
