在去年「具備通車條件」後,港珠澳大橋通車日期一直只聞樓梯響。最終運房局局長陳帆昨在香港口岸人工島上,公布大橋將在下周三早上九時,即在珠海舉辦開通儀式後一日正式通車。作為首條連接香港、澳門及珠海的陸路通道,陳帆形容大橋將成為粵港澳三地的交匯點,進一步鞏固香港作為航運物流樞紐的地位。他又強調大橋將促進香港、澳門和珠三角西部的進一步經濟發展和聯繫,如由珠海到香港國際機場的行車時間,將由四小時減至四十五分鐘,強調大橋將可加速粵港澳大灣區內城市的經濟發展、人員往來和聯繫,對香港以至大灣區的整體發展具有策略意義。
在回應大橋的人流及車流量預測時,陳帆直言大型基建在運作初期都要有一段磨合期,無論是私家車、公共交通或是運輸物流行業都要時間適應,指估計通車初期車流及人流都會較少,是「自然現象」。他亦表示,初期政府團隊會盡力為市民提供良好出行體驗。而至於中長期的估算,他引述顧問指出,在二○三○年,料每日有二萬九千架次車流及十二萬六千人次的人流,但因時間長遠,數據或受經濟發展或交通配套改變有差別。但他亦就大橋的回報,亦希望社會理解應著眼於有關基建對社會發展及經濟效益。
不過,陳亦指出,政府會密切留意大橋的使用量,並會聯同另外兩地政府以及港珠澳大橋管理局研究適當措施,使港珠澳大橋的功用可以得到最大的發揮。如未來機管局將以「多式聯運」模式,讓珠三角西部的乘客不用入境香港,就可通過連接大橋的封閉隧道到直接到機場登機。
旅發局主席林建岳表示,大橋開通對國際旅客具吸引力,為三地旅遊合作提供新契機,有助整合區內多元化的旅遊資源,優勢互補,從而吸引更多旅客以「一程多站」旅遊方式前來。
