A 23-YEAR-OLD China national hanged himself from a tree in a forested area after he found out that he was HIV-positive, a coroner's court heard on Friday.
Wu Wenjie, 23, was a student at the Singapore Institute of Materials Management at Kallang Avenue and was expected to graduate in June this year.
His decomposed body was found at the forested area next to Kranji Expressway flyover on Dec 14 last year.
A school bag containing, among other things, an A4-size note pad written in Chinese was found at the scene.
State Coroner Victor Yeo said it was apparent from the 10-page of notes that Wu was struggling with a decision whether to end his life, and made up his mind on Dec 11.
His good friend and classmate, Ms Zheng Yali, 35, last spoke to him on Dec 13 when he told her that he wanted to end his life.
A day before, he had confided in her that his medical result was out, and that he was tested positive for human immunodeficiency virus.
Investigation showed that he also spoke to his mother on Dec 13 and told her to take good care of herself. In recording a verdict of suicide, Coroner Yeo said Wu hanged himself as he was unable to come to terms with his medical condition and did not want to burden his family with it.
