A man in his thirties in a northern Chinese city was beaten up by a woman he hired as his lover after he failed to pay her monthly “salary”, state media reports.

The man in Taiyuan, Shanxi province, told the local police he had posted a message on the internet seeking a “kept woman” for 10,000 yuan (US$1,520 or HK$11,900) a month, according to China National Radio.

A 22-year-old woman, identified only by her surname Li, agreed to the offer. They met on January 8, but she was put off by his short stature.

She agreed to have sex anyways, but afterwards the man said he wouldn’t pay her the 10,000 yuan all at once, but rather in weekly instalments.

At their second meeting in a hotel room, she brought along several friends. They tied him up and beat him, then stripped him naked and took photographs, local police said.

It was not immediately clear whether an investigation had been launched.
