The Hillsborough disaster was a human crush which occurred during the semi-final FA Cup tie between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest football clubs on 15 April 1989 at the Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, England. The crush resulted in the deaths of 96 people — 94 died on the day and two more victims died later in hospital. Another 766 people were injured. The Hillsborough disaster remains the deadliest stadium-related disaster in British history and one of the world's worst ever football disasters.

In response to the September 2012 report, Attorney General for England and Wales Dominic Grieve MP confirmed he would consider all the new evidence to evaluate whether the original inquest verdicts of accidental death could be overturned.

Hillsborough disaster: key figures in the controversy

The key figures behind what has been described as one of the 'biggest cover-ups in British history'.

Peter Wright, ex-chief constable South Yorkshire Police. Orchestrated police attempts to blame Liverpool fans. Resignation initially rejected, but quit in 1990. Died 2011, aged 82.

David Duckenfield, ex-chief superintendent SYP. Lied to senior officers, blaming drunken, violent supporters. Retired, aged 55, in 1992 having avoided disciplinary action for neglect of duty. No verdict was given in manslaughter case brought by families in 2000.

Bernard Murray, ex-Superintendent SYP. Escaped disciplinary action following Duckenfield’s retirement. Acquitted of manslaughter charges brought by families in 2000. Died in 2006.

Paul Middup, ex-SYP Police Federation Secretary. Was part of the briefing process to White’s News agency in Sheffield, wrongly blaming supporters for the tragedy. Clearly felt he was acting on the authority of the Chief Constable.

Irvine Patnick, ex-conservative MP for Sheffield Hallam. Also named as a source behind the false story distributed by White’s, which was picked up most notoriously by The Sun and branded 'The Truth'. Left politics after losing seat in 1997.

Stefan Popper
, coroner. Popper’s decision to impose a cut-off point of 3.15pm by which time all 96 victims had died, has been shown to be deeply flawed. His controversial verdict of accidental death has been the subject of a campaign for a fresh inquest ever since. Now in retirement.

Prime Minister David Cameron “Profoundly Sorry” for the Hillsborough Disaster
The truth revealed about a tragic incident from 1989

“The new evidence that we are presented with today makes clear that these families have suffered a double injustice,” Cameron said. “The injustice of the appalling events – the failure of the state to protect their loved ones and the indefensible wait to get to the truth. And the injustice of the denigration of the deceased – that they were somehow at fault for their own deaths.” His apology on behalf of the government was a first, and will go some way to help with the healing. Trevor Hicks, who lost two daughters that day, and is part of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, confirmed that the group would be pushing for criminal action against those involved, saying, “We feel a breakthrough has been made,” and, poignantly, that “the truth is out today and the justice starts tomorrow.”

Hillsborough disaster I can never forget, back then we were still using VHS tapes & VHS players. No Youtube too, so I have to reply the special code published in the newspapers to record certain TV programs. The game was played at a time I couldn't be home, so I put in the VHS tape to the player, set timer to record, key in the code. I have recorded TV programs before using the code number, so I expected to watch a soccer match, when I rewinded the tape. It was normal broadcast stuff. advertisements, etc the kickoff etc..the match began...then the disaster struck, people were running around in panic, spilling all over the pitch & so forth...after some time, the transmission stopped.

I kept that recording for years until the VHS tape became mouldy..should have spent monet converting it to VCD when it was available..Hillsborough disaster, who can forget!
