This building in Sevastopol in Russia was supposed to be demolished. Now it has ended up as a poor-man's version of the Leaning Tower of Pisa

A controlled explosion to demolish an illegally built 10 storey-high building in Sevastopol merely left the building leaning to one side

An explosive incident left a curious new addition to a city's sky-line - a leaning tower block.

A controlled explosion to demolish an illegally built 10 storey-high building in Sevastopol, Russia on Friday (December 26) failed, leaving the building leaning to one side and crowds, who had gathered on the site, laughing.

Right after the explosions dense smoke was seen billowing into the air, covering the building and reducing the visibility in the surrounding area.

.Sevastopol resident, Ruslan, said the attempt to demolish the tower block had not failed, but that workers had intentionally used a limited number of explosives to minimise the risk of damaging nearby properties.

"I understand perfectly well that if anybody wanted to do this quickly and effectively then everything would have happened within the first explosion alone.

"But because our authorities understand that the safety of the citizens - who live within a radius of, let's say, 500 metres - comes above all, it is done to cause less damage, so that there is minimum air-blast, minimum dust and minimum destruction. It is a usual scenario," he said.

Local media said another controlled explosion to demolish the building, which was erected illegally in the town centre on Cape Krustalny, will be carried out.

Meanwhile, the leaning structure has now become a curious addition to the city's skyline to the enjoyment of its local residents.
