The family has been afflicted by one illness after another. His daughter was born with just one kidney. His wife was diagnosed with diabetes. Mr Loo, who donated his kidney to his daughter when hers failed, developed cataracts in both eyes.

To pay for their bills, Mr Loo, 54, neglected his own health.

In April this year, when he finally could not cope with the expenses, he turned to a loan shark.

He claims he borrowed "just" $500. But it snowballed into a crushing $20,000 debt in just a few months.

The loan sharks have splashed his door and gate twice. Someone has tried to throw burning newspapers through his bedroom window.
