SINGAPORE: The authorities have seized nearly 1.5 kilogrammes of heroin from a man riding a Malaysia-registered motorcycle at Woodlands Checkpoint on Monday evening.

At about 7.35pm, the Malaysian biker arrived at the checkpoint and was stopped by officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) for routine checks.

In the course of inspection, ICA officers found three black bundles, suspected to be controlled drugs, in the left and right cavities under the motorcycle seat.

Officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) were immediately alerted.

The 28-year-old man and the bundles of suspected drug were handed over to CNB for further investigations.

In a joint statement on Tuesday, ICA and CNB said the seized bundles contained 1,483 grammes of heroin.

The amount has a potential street value of S$155,000 and is estimated to be enough to sustain 705 abusers for a whole week.

The authorities warn that Home Team agencies will press on with checks on passengers and vehicles at checkpoints to foil any attempt to smuggle in undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contraband. - CNA/ec
