SHANGHAI : Singaporeans should continue to give feedback, and constructive criticisms will be accepted and acted on, said Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.
Mr Goh was referring to criticisms of the Singapore Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo.
While touring some country pavilions, Mr Goh saw what nations are exhibiting at the World Expo.
Australia is taking visitors on a journey back to the aboriginal tribes and its vision for the future, while over at the Chinese pavilion, Mr Goh was impressed at how the Chinese brought to "life" a famous painting.
At the Japanese pavilion, robots and the latest technology were on display.
The Senior Minister tried his hand at the interactive element at the Singapore pavilion. He was given a tour of the place, with changes made since negative criticisms were first lobbed at the pavilion.
Speaking to the Singapore media after touring the Expo, Mr Goh said: "We should avoid the temptation to make comparisons because each exhibitor has his own resources, its own goal, its own theme.
"I thought overall (it) was a good effort - something we should be proud of, but obviously there are areas of improvement which they recognize and we should continue to give them feedback with the view of improving the presentation."
Mr Goh also noted that Singaporeans need to use two sets of eyes to view the Singapore pavilion - one as a Singaporean and another as a foreigner who has not seen Singapore.
He said: "The first set with be Singaporean eyes and most of us will be disappointed because we know the reality of Singapore and we have done very much more, we have achieved much more and yet those were not shown through the pavilion. So in our case, the reality is better than what we could show, so naturally we'd be disappointed.
"Then second set of eyes through the foreigners' eyes - they've not seen Singapore so if they look at the pavilion, what images would they bring back? What images would they have of Singapore? That's important."
Prior to Shanghai, Mr Goh was in Guangzhou where he had officiated at the ground breaking ceremony of the "Knowledge City".
The Knowledge City is a commercially driven but government supported project by Singapore in China. Previous Singapore investments in China, such as the Suzhou Industrial Park and the Tianjin Eco-city, have been at government-to-government level.
The Senior Minister said that this latest investment project is a model he would like to see more of in the future.
On the recent China-Taiwan trade deal, Mr Goh said the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement signed between the two sides is a good development for Asia.
He said some Southeast Asia countries may face competition from Taiwanese exports, but on the whole, the region will be able to cope.
Mr Goh added: "For Southeast Asia, we already have an ASEAN-China FTA so what it means is that Taiwanese exports which were less competitive before are now just as competitive, assuming the tariff levels are the same.
"If Taiwan enjoys better tariff levels than Southeast Asian countries, then of course we are disadvantaged, then of course it's for us to negotiate with China...
"In Singapore's case, we've got to look at the exports. I think certain electronic products could be affected because Taiwan is a great producer of electronic products, so are we. But if Taiwan enjoys a tariff advantage over Singapore, than of course we might be affected."
