He had sex with his steady girlfriend – who was then 14 – but when she reported him to the police, he hit her in the face, bruising it badly.
For this, the 23-year-old was yesterday jailed for eight weeks. He had pleaded guilty.
A district court ordered his name to be withheld, as publishing it could identify the girl.
They met in April 2009, when she was in secondary school, and he was a 21-year-old job seeker.
They exchanged phone numbers and started going steady.
He visited her at her home in Woodlands and some time the following month, he had sex with her although he knew her to be only 14.
They continued the intimate relationship. Fearing she would fall pregnant, the girl confided in her sister.
In June last year, she went with her mother to a doctor and tested positive for pregnancy. She was then two months gone.
The mother also took her to the police.
The girl had the baby aborted and a paternity test concluded that her boyfriend was the father.
On Aug 23 last year, the couple were chatting when he asked her whether she had gone to the police, because they were looking for him.
She denied it at first, but buckled under his persistent questioning.
On hearing that the police had been alerted, he hit her.
They broke up in November last year.
During sentencing, the court took into consideration two other charges of sex with an underage girl for trysts he had with her in April last year.
For having sex with a girl under 16, he could have been jailed up to five years and fined up to $10,000.
For hitting her, he could have been jailed up to a year and/or fined up to $1,000.
