Despite seeing unemployment rate hitting a decade-high of 3.3%, President Halimah Yacob signed 8 agreements with Philippines on Monday (Sep 9), inviting more Filipino nationals to work in Singapore.

In a press release, Singapore’s government agency Enterprise Singapore will facilitate Filipino workers in several industries like education, water management, training, agriculture and “cultural cooperation”.

The agreements will see Filipino workers being trained under the Singapore’s SkillsFuture framework, making it easier for them to work in Singapore. The Singapore economy is heavily dependent on cheap foreign labour to keep wage costs low, and the government often source labour from third world countries who are willing to work at a fraction of the local’s pay expectations.
