A young Hindu man was beaten to death in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, over alleged blasphemy. Police say the body was later tied to a tree and set on fire.
A group of people allegedly beat a Hindu man to death in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, in Bangladesh, accusing him of blasphemy, reported BBC Bangla. Police said the incident occurred on Thursday night in the Square Master Bari Dubalia Para area of Bhaluka upazila.
After beating him to death, the attackers tied the body of the young man to a tree and set it on fire, Bhaluka police station duty officer Ripon Mia was quoted as saying by BBC Bangla.
Police identified the deceased as Dipu Chandra Das. He worked at a local garment factory and was living in the area as a tenant, officials said based on preliminary information. “On Thursday around 9 PM, an enraged crowd caught him and beat him to death, accusing him of making derogatory remarks about the Prophet. They then set the body on fire,” duty officer Mia told BBC Bangla.
After receiving information, police went to the scene and brought the situation under control. Officials said the body of Das was sent to the morgue at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. No case has been filed so far in connection with the incident.
“We are looking for his relatives. If they come forward and file a case, action will be taken in accordance with the law,” Mia said.
Violence in Bangladesh over student activist’s death
A spate of violence has again broken out in Bangladesh over the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi’s death. Hadi, who was shot in the head last week, succumbed to his injuries during treatment at Evercare Hospital in Singapore.
Following his death violence broke out in Dhaka and other cities, with protesters demanding “justice”. Offices of two newspapers, Daily Star and Prothom Alo, were set on fire. Later, Dhanmondi 32, the house of Bangladesh founder Sheikh Mujibur Rehman which was demolished in February this year, was also set on fire.
