A San Jose family was charged with operating a network of brothels that trafficked dozens of women, according to the Santa Clara County DA's Office.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A San Jose family was charged with operating a network of brothels that trafficked dozens of women and generated about $1 million a year, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors allege Joseph and Binghua Bresee, a married couple, ran at least 10 commercial sex brothels across Santa Clara County under the guise of massage parlors, with locations in San Jose, Gilroy, Morgan Hill, Cupertino and Mountain View.

One of their adult children, Jiabao Huang, was also charged, and another co-conspirator was arrested on suspicion of laundering money for the operation. In total, the defendants face 26 felony counts including conspiracy, pimping, money laundering and tax fraud.

Prosecutors said that at their Dec. 5 arraignment, a judge set bail for the three main defendants -- Joseph Bresee, 77; Binghua Bresee, 52; and Huang, 30 -- at $1 million each. All face prison time if convicted. Investigators have seized or frozen more than $1.25 million in alleged illegal proceeds.

The investigation -- dubbed Operation Family Ties -- involved DA investigators, the FBI and multiple local police departments. Authorities began looking into the case in June when a Morgan Hill police officer became suspicious after a defendant tried to open a massage parlor using another person's name.

The probe later uncovered a brothel tied to the group in Hayward. The operation culminated in a coordinated series of search warrants and arrests on Dec. 3. Authorities said 18 workers were recovered during the searches, and more than 40 women were identified over the course of the investigation.

"The trafficking of human beings has no place in our community, or any other," District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in a statement released Thursday. "Modern slavery is morally and legally wrong and will be met with no toleration and -- as you can see by the agencies cooperating in this operation -- the strictest legal accountability."
