A fire occurred yesterday (5th) night at an HDB unit in Chai Chee Avenue Block 31. According to neighbours, this incident may have been an arson case linked to loan sharks.
When reporters arrived at the scene this morning (6th), they found that all belongings inside the burnt unit had been destroyed. The corridors and ceilings outside the unit and seven nearby flats were badly blackened. Repair workers were already carrying out restoration.
The area beneath the affected unit remained cordoned off. The ground was littered with broken glass, and a burnt metal window frame, believed to have fallen during the blaze, was found there.
A 64-year-old resident from the 7th floor, Mr. Huang Liying, said the tenant of the burnt unit was an Indian man who had recently been released from prison. He was allegedly targeted by loan sharks over debts, who then set fire to the unit.
Another neighbour, who declined to be named, said he heard others say that loan sharks had thrown a “Molotov cocktail” to deliberately start the fire.
Mr. Stanley Neville, 68, who lives next door to the burnt unit, said that at the time of the fire, he was drinking at home when he suddenly heard quarrelling outside.
“There were Indians arguing outside. I didn’t know what they were fighting about. Then I heard what sounded like a glass bottle being thrown into the unit. I didn’t think much of it and went to bed after drinking. It was only when police came knocking and told everyone to evacuate that I realised my neighbour’s flat was on fire.”
In response to queries from 8world News, the Singapore Police Force said they received a report of the fire at about 11 p.m. last night. Four men, aged between 20 and 78, were sent to the hospital conscious. Police investigations are ongoing.
