There might be hope for the millions of people who might need an organ or some other body part to live. A new form of medicine called ‘regenerative medicine’ would come to their rescue very soon.

In this process, cells in the body will be manipulated to produce intended tissues.

The process has already shown positive signs because researchers have already created ears, beating hearts and even bladders with it. Several hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested into the project by the Pentagon and Biotech companies to make the dream a reality.

Already, institutions like the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine are already working on over 22 different kinds of organs and tissues. The head of the institute - Dr. Anthony Atala said there are no limit to the number of organs and kinds of organs that can be created using the regenerative medicine technology.

In describing how the technology works, Dr. Atala said every organ in our body has special cells called stem cells. The stem cells are unique to every organ or tissue and they determine how that part works. He said that the key to reproducing other body parts is to isolate the stem cell and multiply the cells in the lab.

Scientists say they hope the breakthrough will in the future help those who are on the transplant list to get the organ they are looking for.
