One only needs to observe how those stalls are run. There are 2 types of hawker stalls - ones rented from HDB & others from private landlords.

Those rented from HDB are cheaper, can even afford to operate only a few hrs a day even when the rent meter is still running. Its ok as tenents are not robots & if their profits are made, it is sustainable with even no price increase.

But those from private landlords faced hefty rents, & often open for longer hrs. Worse if their meals are bland or mediocre - small target audience, & thus price rise to cover costs or poor performance/mgmt.

Solutions abound if they but open their eyes & own tastebuds

KUALA LUMPUR (REUTERS) - Malaysia's Prime Minister Ismail Sabri said on Monday (May 23) his Cabinet had agreed to halt exports of 3.6 million chickens a month from June and abolish the approved permit requirement for importing wheat until production and prices stabilise.

Malaysia last week scrapped the approved permits for importing round cabbage, old coconuts, chicken and milk in a bid to secure food supplies and curtail rising prices.

Chicken is the most widely consumed meat in Singapore, with a per capita consumption of 36kg in 2020, according to data from the Singapore Food Agency.

The Republic imports more than a third of its chicken supply from Malaysia.
