An 83-year-old woman lost control of her car, knocking down a delivery rider and nearly ploughing into a coffee shop in Clementi.

A roadside bollard stopped the car just metres from the entrance, averting what onlookers called a potential tragedy.

The accident occurred at about 6.35pm at a zebra crossing near Block 449 Clementi Avenue 3 on July 28, just a few metres from a coffee shop.

When Shin Min Daily News reporters arrived on the scene, they found the car had slammed into a bollard, damaging it heavily. The car's front and right side were crumpled, and its licence plate had dislodged from the impact.

Mr Pan, 65, who runs a nearby ice cream stall, said he rushed over after hearing a loud crash: "A female motorcyclist was on the ground, and her arm looked injured. She couldn't move, and the paramedics later bandaged her."

He added that the car appeared to have struck the motorcycle, lost control, and veered onto the pavement. Fortunately, a stone bollard halted the vehicle just outside the coffee shop.

A close call

Footage circulating online shows the car had hit a parked motorcycle and a black car before coming to a stop. Both vehicles were believed to be stationary when the car struck them from behind.

A female coffee shop employee added that many people were watching the incident: "There was a loud bang, and everyone was scared, but they all went to check what happened."

Another staff member said of the injured rider: "I've seen her around before. She could still talk after the accident, but everyone was really shaken. If not for that bollard, someone might have died."

Two people who identified themselves as family members of the elderly driver later arrived at the scene. One said the driver was her grandmother and that no one in the car had been hurt.

By 9pm, about 20 onlookers remained at the scene. Traffic police were present to manage the situation, and the damaged car was eventually towed away.

In response to queries from Shin Min, the police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force said the incident involved two cars and a motorcycle.

A 26-year-old female rider was conscious when taken to the National University Hospital. The elderly driver is assisting with ongoing police investigations.

Amazing that she is allowed to drive at her age. She is a bloody road hazard and risk to fellow motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

That's the kopitiam with the famous popiah stall. Was previously an independent kopitiam, then underwent renovation and turned into another FoodHub kopitiam.

Luckily there was no innocent life taken.
As usual, this is just 1 of the many failed pap policies for monetary gains.

I know this car park. It looks like she is exiting. at this stretch, she would have just turned a 90degree right and moved approx 20m before hitting the car and bike. Quite impossible to speed at the stretch.

That zebra crossing has high human traffic especially if the accident happened at 635pm as reported. High chance is that her muscle control gave up or mis-stepped due to the constant stop-start-stop for the pedestrians to cross. it can be very annoying even for younger drivers

Bottom line is - above 70s should not be allowed to drive!!!!
