Improving TFR alone won't help Singapore's population: IPS

SINGAPORE - Even if Singapore improved on its Total Fertility Rate (TFR), its population would still decline if it did not accept enough migrants.

This is the finding of the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) on the state of Singapore's population, which it released today.

The demographic project - which the IPS embarked on in 2007 and released to the Government in April - studied 48 scenarios which examined how Singapore's future population would look like if its TFR changed.

The IPS presented four out of 48 scenarios at a roundtable session, today.

IPS director, Mr Janadas Devan, said it concluded that without migration of some magnitude, Singapore's population would decline even if it managed to boost its TFR to 1.85, up from the current 1.15.

This is one of the lowest in the world, below the replacement level of two children per woman in developed countries.

The key conclusion of the project was that if the resident TFR for Singapore remained extremely low over the long term and there was no in-migration, the resident population could expect to decline and be extremely aged.

The results of this exercise suggested that raising TFR alone would only improve the situation marginally.

When asked how IPS arrived at net migration figures in the scenarios, its senior research fellow, Dr Yap Mui Teng, said they were not privy to migration figures from the National Population and Talent Division and that the numbers were estimates of past population numbers at different time periods, as well as birth and death figures.

When asked why these four scenarios were selected out of the 48, Dr Yap said they reflected the conditions at the time of the study.

Mr Devan added that the TFR and net migration figures adopted in the project were "realistic and reasonable".

seriously just tell those A level kids, no uni admission until you got 2 kids. Guys get NS exemption after 2 kids..

outlaw abortion, outlaw the pill.. people who abort get their ovaries cut, citizenship revoke...

PR must have kids before they can get citizenship, the kids must get citizenship

only FTs with Masters degree from Ivy League, Oxbridge can get citizenship, PRs must have degree

if we can ban chewing gum we can do anything...

Once ABORTION is banned and re-classified as foetus-cide, even the doctors won't dare do it back-alley (black market style) as the penalty could be a life sentence or even the death penalty.

Female SG citizens of child bearing age travelling overseas need to furnish with their passports a recent certified pregnancy test result issued from a govt clinic at the immigration exit points to prevent people going overseas for an abortion.
