The squid hides in the nasty of the seal. Scientists are shocked.

A long black-and-white squid picture hung in the navel of the seal taken northwest of the Hawaiian Islands, which has recently passed on the Internet, has drawn attention to this rare phenomenon. This photo was shared by Facebook on the Hawaiian "Monk seal" research project of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

This matter has been plagued by scientists who hope that these endangered seals can "make better choices." Hawaiian veterinarian and seal monk expert Claire Simeone said on the 6th that "the animal has another animal on its nose. This is too shocking."

As early as about two years ago, Charles Littnan, the chief scientist of the Seals program, received an email from the researchers with the main theme: "Squid nose."

The other party saw the squid repeatedly protruding from the nose of the seal, so the letter asked if there was a precedent? How to deal with it? Finally, they decided to pull the squid out of the squid's nose and pull it for more than a minute. The result was a 2.5-inch long squid.

Litnan said that since then, at least three or four more cases have been reported, the most recent one being this fall. After the squid was successfully removed, the seals lived very well, but the squid did not survive. Litnan said they could not explain why.

The preferred prey for seals is usually fish, octopus, and of course salmon. The squid likes to hide in the coral reef to avoid being eaten. The seals like to put their faces into the coral reef hole. "Maybe," Litnan said, "The only way for a squid to escape or defend itself is to enter the attacker. Nasal holes; young seals who are not very good at getting food are forced to learn this difficult lesson."

Although no seals are dead or severely affected by salmon, in the long run, placing dead animals on the nose can have potentially adverse health effects.

Simone said that if the squid stays in the nose, the seals will not be able to close the blocked nostrils when they dive, and the water will enter the lungs and cause pneumonia. In addition, the decomposition of the carp body can also lead to infection. But Simone also said that marine animals are persevering and "a lot of things that can be tolerated."
