Wrong picture in ST could fan anti-Vietnamese sentiments, heighten tensions: Readers

A picture published in national broadsheet The Straits Times on 16 May about the protest in the Vietnamese-Singapore Industrial Parks, located in Vietnam, came under fire as readers charged that it could incite anti-Vietnamese sentiments in favour of the Chinese.

The picture used was from a news report on water poisoning accident which happened on 15 May, where workers from a shoe factory were reported to have been affected and had to receive medical attention. Readers have indicated that this was reported in other reputable Vietnamese news sources.

The caption by The Straits Times on its front page article, however, indicated that the image depicts 500 Chinese workers who were trapped in their dormitory as a result of the protests, which happened due to unhappiness among the Vietnamese over China’s deployment of an oil rig in the disputed waters near the Paracels in the South China Sea. The islands are claimed by both China and Vietnam.

Readers were irate that such an error can happen on a national newspaper, and http://www.theonlinecitizen.com/201...tnamese-sentiments-heighten-tensions-readers/

Screw the Vietnamese for burning the Singapore flag.....

They must apologise to Singaporeans too .....

SPH doggies are not known for the quality of their journalism.

However, assign them a task to be cheerleaders of the PAP regime and they'll perform it to excellence.

it's seemingly not a dishonest mistake.. nothing to see. move on.

Did Yakult read the right things?
Or did MDA authorise the mistake?

Sometimes I think ST never use brain...........why would China send 500 Chinese female employees to work in a shit-hole like Vietnam, where the wages are 1/5 that of China?

Think most likely it is put through by the pinoy staff at ST to incite violence.........

The 154th is just learning from the Kelings when they broadcasted in their domestic TV with the "twisted" Little India riots back then. So, nothing new anyway.

FTs control MSM?

[h=1]ST PUBLISHES FALSE INFORMATION ABOUT THE RIOTS IN VIETNAM[/h]
Post date:
17 May 2014 - 3:58pm

Several Vietnamese readers have raised their concerns about the false information being spread by Singapore’s Straits Times in relation to the riots in Vietnam.
The above picture was posted on the Straits Times both print and online editions showing many sick Chinese patients being treated by doctors and nurses.
The image was accompanied by the caption:
“A photo taken yesterday showing some 500 Chinese workers from the Baoyuan shoe factory in Ho Chi Minh City trapped inside their dormitory, hiding from angry Vietnamese protesters. The mob tried to break down the doors several times, leaving some of the workers slightly injured. -- PHOTO: COURTESY OF ZHANG HUSHENG”

In response to this, many Vietnamese people who had read the article claimed that the image and caption were wrong. In fact, the image appears to be from a different incident and is unrelated to the anti-china riots.
They explained that this was a separate incident involving Vietnamese workers being treated for health problems in relation to poisoned water at their workplace.
Many commenters on the Straits Times website clarified the misinformation and straits times edited their online edition accordingly:

Separately, there were also many facebook posts about the misinformation with Vietnamese people citing several reputable Vietnamese news sources about the real source of the photo:
One Vietnamese netizen shared a photo of the ST article and wrote:

Why is Singapore's leading dailies to post opinions about the situation in Vietnam?
The photo shows the 700 Vietnamese workers in a plant poisoned drinking water have recently been trained on medical care. So that The Straits Times back references they are 500 Chinese workers suffer the Vietnam protesters and locked up! Look at the pictures of the people of Singapore and QT will understand is LETTING workers to violence is located in la and need medical care!
Such mistakes could push tensions further. Not only the Vietnamese journalists that pv QT needs careful and responsible with his pen! (Translated by Bing)

This post received over 280 shares and another thread sharing this had one Vietnamese woman, Bui Thi Tam, explaining where the image originated from:

These are the links to vietnamese news sources which show the original story from which the photo ST had used had come from:

While many netizens were upset over the misinformation, some did acknowledge that this is a time of crisis and there is a lot of misinformation flying around, even in Vietnamese newspapers. However given the political sensitivity of the current issues, it is important for international news media to report carefully.
It seems that ST had taken the image from a Chinese Newspaper and wrongly linked it to the anti-China riots occuring in Vietnam.
The online edition has since been edited to remove the photo and caption but the printed paper cannot be changed so easily.
Many have taken to the ST website to express that ST should publish a clarification piece on the misinformation:
