Goodbye golden arches: Rebranded McDonald's to reopen in Russia

JUNE 10, 2022PUBLISHED AT 6:01 PM

Sunday (June 12) marks a new dawn for Russia's fast-food lovers as former McDonald's Corp restaurants reopen under new branding and ownership, more than three decades after the arrival of the hugely popular Western fast food chain.

The relaunch will begin on Russia Day, a patriotic holiday celebrating the country's independence, at the same flagship location in Moscow's Pushkin Square where McDonald's first opened in Russia in January 1990.

In the early 1990s, as the Soviet Union crumbled, McDonald's came to embody a thawing of Cold War tensions and was a vehicle for millions of Russians to sample American food and culture. The brand's exit is now a powerful symbol of how Russia and the West are once again turning their backs on each other.

McDonald's last month said it was selling its restaurants in Russia to one of its local licensees, Alexander Govor. The deal marked one of the most high-profile business departures since Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24.

McDonald's iconic 'Golden Arches' have been taken down at sites in Moscow and St Petersburg, where they will make way for a new logo comprising two fries and a hamburger patty against a green background. The reopening will initially cover 15 locations in Moscow and the surrounding region.

Headwinds

Govor has said he plans to expand the new brand, which has yet to be named, to 1,000 locations across the country and reopen all the chain's restaurants within two months. But there may be some headwinds.

It takes decades to build a brand, said Peter Gabrielsson, Professor of International Marketing at Finland's University of Vaasa, and the new launch is crucial for the brand's future success.

"Opening day is important because it is the first time consumers can really feel and touch and see the brand and what it stands for," he said. "It's important what the reaction will be and obviously people will be comparing it to McDonald's."

McDonald's, the world's largest burger chain, had owned 84 per cent of its nearly 850 restaurants across Russia and it took a charge of up to US$1.4 billion (S$1.93 billion) following the sale to Govor, whose GiD LLC had previously run 25 restaurants.

Oleg Paroev of McDonald's Russia has said other franchisees would have the option of working under the new brand, but the traditional McDonald's brand will leave the country. McDonald's has said it will retain its trademarks.

McDonald's last year generated about 9 per cent, or US$2 billion, of its revenue from Russia and Ukraine. McDonald's has the right to buy its Russia restaurants back within 15 years, but many terms of the sale to Govor remain unclear.

The TASS news agency said on Wednesday McDonald's would stay open as usual at airports and train stations in Moscow and St Petersburg until 2023, quoting a source close to Rosinter Restaurants, another franchisee.

"Rosinter has a unique agreement under which the American corporation cannot take the franchise away. They can operate in peace," TASS quoted the source as saying.

Rosinter declined to comment. McDonald's did not immediately respond.

Bitblaze laptop

After the invasion of Ukraine, Russia faced myriads of difficulties. Most of them are related to the sanctions. However, the most important (for Russia) among them concern technologies, software, and hardware. Russia is not allowed to use any product or component that has been developed in the countries that applied the sanctions. You know that Google, Apple, Intel, and many other biggies have completely canceled all kinds of cooperation with Russia. However, this is not only a punch but also an opportunity. In many aspects, the situation is similar to that of Huawei. And as you know, as a result, the latter developed its own operating system that might dethrone not only Android and iOS in the mobile OS market but also Windows in the PC market. The Russian company Promobit is preparing to produce a Bitblaze Titan BM15 notebook computer. This laptop will use an in-house-made “Baikal-M” processor.

BITBLAZE TITAN BM15 FEATURES

This sounds quite interesting. But we have to get into details in order to understand whether this model will be able to substitute those used by Russians. As for other key features, the Bitblaze Titan BM15 notebook will feature a 15.6-inch 1080p IPS screen; also, it will come with 16GB memory and 512GB SSD storage; our protagonist will support Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; there will be built-in USB 3.0, HDMI, USB Type-C and RJ-45 interfaces as well as an audio jack; lastly, the laptop will sport a 6000mAh battery.
The manufacturer is going to offer two versions in terms of materials. Apart from the conventional aluminum alloy variant, there will also be a titanium alloy version.
Bitblaze Titan BM15

Well, all these features seem not astonishing but acceptable. What about the performance? As said, the laptop uses the Baikal-M series processor developed by a Russian company. [drumroll] But it uses a TSMC 28nm process. Also, its octa-core architecture integrates Cortex-A57 cores at a frequency of up to 1.5GHz. The chip adopts the Mali-T628 MP8 GPU core at a frequency of 750MHz. It supports dual-channel DDR4-2400 or DDR3-1600 memory. The chip’s power consumption does not exceed 35W. Finally, it is compatible with Astra Linux or Alt Linux operating systems.

Now, the good news. The first batch of Bitblaze Titan BM15 will be assembled in the next few months. There will be around 1,000 units. The main consumers of the Bitblaze Titan BM15 will be Russian government and enterprise customers. Lastly, the laptop prices will vary from 100,000 rubles (about $1608) to 120,000 rubles (about $1929).

good reason nobody, anywhere, around the world takes iran turkey egypt or other low IQ mediocre races tiny countries seriously

we expect iran to be a mega stinkypura
but no it can't, it fails
well, it's under sanctions embargo isolation and demonization campaign unlike stinkypura which is a loyal yankee poodle, fine. good reasonable excuses.

then we expect iran to be a larger north korea
but no it can't, it fails
because north korea is even more isolated, smaller, surrounded on all sides by enemies or two of three strongest military powers on earth (tiongs and russkies) but norkies have discipline IQ work ethic that low IQ iranians don't possess

iranians lump closer together with people of similar IQ lazy work ethic lousy culture. like latinos, arabs, pakis, afghans, turks, ceca virus.

is it a wonder that every single one of those groups is a failure today?

look at PISA academic results.
look at patent publications or grants
look at earnings from IP (int property)
look at global brands
look at advanced tech or advanced theories or theorems or principles forwarded by these peoples. you can add asean to this list alongside niggers

can we say race and IQ are the real reason that Iran remains a failure, despite shouting at the top of its lungs, death to america death to israel death to britain? that after the slightest bit of sanctions they squeal and sign JCPOA unlike norkies who are smaller and have already tested ICBM and nukes?

here's what coolie gene stinkypura (smaller than bahrain in area, smaller than tehran in population) has built even when it lacks talent legends scholars land mass history scenery intellect high IQ, originality or creativity

this is despite stinkypura being a 160th ranked media jurisdiction, a low originality, low creativity, coolie gene, ugly, low IQ, low intellect, country infamous for money laundering and tax evasion activities

SINGAPORE -- The world’s biggest semi-submersible crane vessel (SSCV) is set to blaze a trail when it enters into service in the coming months, armed with the strongest pair of revolving cranes for offshore oil, gas and renewable energy installation and decommissioning jobs.

Named after the Norse God Odin’s eight-legged stallion and newly completed at Sembcorp Marine's Tuas Boulevard Yard for owner Heerema Marine Contractors, SSCV Sleipnir has a 220-m by 102-m reinforced deck area, making it the largest crane vessel to be built.

The vessel also has two 10,000-ton revolving cranes which can lift loads of up to 20,000 tons in tandem. No other existing crane vessel has this capability.

Sleipnir can accommodate 400 persons and will be deployed globally for installing and removing jackets, topsides, deep-water foundations, moorings and other offshore structures.

Importantly, with its single-lift capability catering to larger integrated structures than previously possible, Sleipnir will minimize offshore assembly work and raise operational efficiency to a new level, while not compromising the flexibility and robustness of traditional installation methodologies.

The vessel further stands out as the world’s first crane vessel with dual-fuel engines running on Marine Gas Oil (MGO) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). Coupled with an IMO- and US Coast Guard-approved ballast water management system, Sleipnir will operate sustainably across all environmental jurisdictions.

Heerema has already secured contracts to deploy the vessel in various offshore energy developments, including: Leviathan topsides installation in the Mediterranean Sea; Tyra jackets and topsides installation and removal in the Danish North Sea; Brae B jackets and topsides removal in the UK North Sea; as well as transportation and installation of the Hollandse Kust Zuid (HKZ) Alpha HVAC platform in the North Sea, off the Dutch coast.

by right iran should have been able to outbuild stinkypura per capita
given the enormous amounts of natural resources including land water sunlight wind metals oil gas wind solar nuclear energy scenery history architecture that Iran is endowed with.

but nooooo, they fail.

they also fail, repeatedly, when compared with north korea on a per capita basis.

costs about $1.5 billion that's $1500 million

in comparison a low tech, run of the mill aframax container ( I know iran turkey egypt indon or pakis haven't got ability to build anything bigger) costs $50-60 million

they can't build anything more sophisticated

race and IQ is the answer

Race and IQ
It is the average IQ that counts. In a race or country, there is a always the top 1% and the botoom 1% in the society.

I always give this narrrative :
A factory to be successful needs a good boss. The boss also need good accountant, marketing personnel, operation engineer, maintenance engineer, production workers, plumbers, logistic and the list goes on. So if only the boss is talented, it will always on the drawing board.

A good electrician IQ have to be 90~100. This is just a pre-requisite. So Imagine a country with an average IQ of 85. Yes we can find many electricians .... how about engineers? I also need alot to be successful. You get my drift!!!
