Mid-year bonus for civil servants

Good news for civil servants. The government has decided to pay a mid-year Annual Variable Component (AVC) of 0.5 month plus $300 in July 2010.
A statement from the Public Service Division said the July payout comes against a backdrop of Singapore’s continuing economic growth.
PSD said Singapore’s economic recovery has been stronger than expected as it grew by 15.5% on a year-on-year basis in the first quarter of 2010, compared to 3.8% in the fourth quarter of 2009.
The mid-year payout announcement was applauded by civil servants.
Said army regular Jay Chan, 30, ‘I’m glad we are receiving something because the additional cash will go into my family fund.”
For Ying Chin, 28, a teacher, the bonus is timely. “I am starting a family and whatever we are receiving will come in handy, but at the same time, I was hoping for much more since the economy has recovered,” she said.
The government will decide on the year-end AVC when Singapore’s economic performance in the second half of 2010 is clearer.
