Golfer's family sues TMCC for lightning death
Widow, son claim club failed to ensure there were effective warning procedures in place
By K. C. Vijayan, Law Correspondent
THE family of a golfer who died after he was struck by lightning at a golf course is suing Tanah Merah Country Club (TMCC) for damages.
His widow, Madam Tan Lee Hwa, 51, and son Jeffrey, 23, claim that the club failed to ensure there were effective procedures in place to warn golfers and others of the approach of lightning.
Mr Soh Lye Huat, 57, was on the 17th hole of the golf course with three friends when lightning struck in October 2009.
He was the only one hit. His friends called for an ambulance and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
A TMCC marshal turned up about 10 minutes later with a first-aid kit and an automated external defibrillator (AED), which is a life-saving device.
As Mr Soh had a weak pulse, the AED was not used, in line with TMCC's first-aid plan, which requires the AED to be used only when neither breathing nor a pulse is detected.
