When I first started at the driving range, I focussed a lot on just getting comfortable with my swing. For that, the 7-iron was perfect, easier to hit, not too long, and forgiving when you mess up. Once I got used to making decent contact, I slowly tried out the 5-iron, some wedges for different distances, and then, way later, the driver. The driver is fun, but honestly, I got way more out of starting with the shorter irons and only adding more clubs as I got better. Borrowing a set or picking up a used half set is a good shout in the beginning.
