SINGAPORE - The petite gelato cafe entrepreneur, Ms Kelly Sng Wei Lan, who was found dead at her Bukit Timah residence in March this year died from head injuries when her head slammed onto the floor after she fainted.

An inquiry launched into her death on Sept 16 also found that her fainting spells could be attributed to an eating disorder.

According to The Straits Times, the 36-year-old had all the tell-tale signs of an eating disorder - she was 1.67m tall but weighed only 43kg.

Medical records showed that Sng suffered bouts of giddiness and had fainted twice previously. On one occasion in August 2009, she suffered a head injury.

However, police did not find any evidence to suggest foul play.

State Coroner Imran Hamid agreed with the findings of investigation officer Mohammad Erwan Zakariya who had testified that the cause of the death was a head injury, consistent with that sustained in a fall where the back of the head slammed onto a hard surface like a floor.

On March 4, Sng was found lying motionless on the floor of her bedroom by her father Mr Sng Eng Chua, 66.

Ms Susana Balmediano Espina, 47, who has been the family's maid for the past 19 years, said that Sng, who is single, appeared normal the night before as she did in the past few days.

Ms Sng was the daughter of the Orchard Road Business Association chairman, Mrs Sng Ngoi May, 65. Mrs Sng also the director of Orchard 290 – a subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings – which owns Paragon Shopping Centre.

Mrs Sng described her daughter as someone who was physically fit and went to the gym regularly.

In 2004, the then 29-year-old struck out with two friends to open the Estivo Gelateria cafe in Greenwood Avenue, with a capital of $200,000.

In recent years, Ms Sng is believed to have worked as a teacher. She graduated from the Faculty of Law at the National University of Singapore in 1997, and worked at law firm Wong Tan and Molly Lim for five years as a corporate lawyer.
