GEORGE TOWN: A renovation worker’s left hand was almost severed when 20 men with parang attacked him and his friends in front of a hotel in Gurney Drive here.
The 29-year-old man, who also suffered cuts on his face, was sent to Penang Hospital where doctors tried to stitch back the hand.
Eyewitnesses said the man and two friends came out of an entertainment outlet when the parang-wielding mob set on them in the 3am incident yesterday.
“One of his friends fled the scene while the other suffered light injuries,” they said.

Grievous injuries: The victim being sent to Penang Hospital Sunday.
Policemen, who arrived at the scene later, found the man bleeding on the pavement opposite the hotel.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng, who confirmed the case, said police later found a Nissan Frontier at the car park of a flat in Macallum Street Ghaut.
“We believe the vehicle, with blood stains on the steering wheel, was used by the suspects after they attacked the three men.
“We also found two parang near the scene, one underneath the bench and another thrown among the rocks of a tree near the sea,” he said.
ACP Gan said police have yet to make any arrests but they have ascertained the identity of the suspects.
“Initial investigations revealed that the gang had retaliated on the three for beating its members.
“But we have yet to determine the actual motive of the attack until the victim is fit to give his statement,” he said.
