SINGAPORE: A former pharmacy technician with the National University Hospital was sentenced on Monday to three weeks' jail for misappropriating 3,500 sleeping tablets worth nearly S$2,400.

Forty-year-old Isnawati Zainolabidin's misdeed came to light during a stock audit in September 2009.

Her colleague noticed that a huge number of tablets had been collected within just two days and the figure did not tally with the hospital's normal usage pattern.

An investigation revealed that Isnawati had requested for the tablets to be transferred from the central pharmacy to a satellite pharmacy within the same hospital but the medication was missing from the satellite pharmacy.

Closed-circuit television footage later showed Isnawati collecting the tablets from the central pharmacy.

A senior pharmacy technician confronted her about the matter and she admitted making off with the tablets.

However, it was not mentioned in court why she misappropriated the medication.
