During the past few months I have been trying to gather anecdotal evidence regarding whether Foreign Talent is really required and contribution to Singapore’s well being is indeed true.
Here are two findings:
• A significant proportion of bank tellers in Banks (mainly Local Banks) are foreigners on Employment Pass or S Pass. I would think that Singaporeans would be glad to take these jobs which pay well and have decent work hours.
• In many food stalls in Food courts, the foreign workers and waiters are foreigners on Employment Pass. I find this totally unacceptable. The minimum salary for Employment pass holders is $3,000 and how can a waiter earn so much? Something must be wrong. When I investigated deeper, I found out that these workers get paid $1,000 – 1,500. The balance amount is considered as cost of their boarding, lodging and transportation. This is a clever way to get around the rules of minimum salary requirement.
There has been very poor monitoring and enforcement. This is total abuse of the FT policy.
