PETALING JAYA: A minor earthquake was recorded in the waters of the Straits of Malacca today, but residents on land have not reported feeling any tremors, according to the meteorological department.

MetMalaysia director-general Hisham Anip confirmed that the quake occurred in the Straits, but no tremors have been reported on land so far, according to Utusan Malaysia.

Separately, a minor 2.9-magnitude earthquake struck Semerah in Batu Pahat, Johor, at 1.57pm, causing the seventh tremor reported in Johor in the past week, following six earlier quakes in Segamat and Yong Peng.

The minor quakes are believed to be caused by active local fault lines in the region and the broader Pacific “Ring of Fire”.

The US geological survey reported seismic activity in Southeast Asia, with three low-magnitude earthquakes in Indonesia: east of Teluk Dalam, west-northwest of Tobelo (both 4.6), and west-southwest of Tual (4.9), and a 5.0-magnitude quake southeast of Pyapon in Burma.

Batu Pahat is between Segamat and Singapore.

Between Batu Pahat and Singapore, Forest City has the most vulnerable terrain.

If Forest City is fine, we are definitely safe.
