French schools are sexist, says state report
LONDON DAILY TELEGRAPH – 21 AUGUST 2013
French schools are sexist, with boys receiving preferential treatment because teachers are reinforcing gender stereotypes, according to a controversial education ministry report.
According to extracts of the report published in 'Le Figaro', education ministry inspectors found that teachers treat boys "in a preferential manner while remaining convinced they are being totally fair".
Girls, it concludes, are considered "naturally responsible and ready to help" – and thus normally assigned the role of "looking after" the class when the teacher has to leave it.
But when it comes to scholastic ability, teachers' expectations of girls are "lower". (© Daily Telegraph, London)
