A new, free iPad app allows you to create an even more immersive memory of your favourite things - if you are willing
to take 40 photos of your object.
Anyone with an iPad 2 or the New iPad can use the in-built camera to take pictures, and then the Autodesk 123D app
will re-assemble it into a virtual 3D object. At that point, the app steps in, studies your images, and turns it into an
object that you can spin around and zoom in and out of.
And - while not many of us are likely to have one just yet - you can even send your image to a 3D printer, which can
create an exact replica for your living room table.
The software originally launched for Windows last year, but as tablets have taken off, Autodesk re-coded the application
for the iPad, allowing you to make your designs on the go.
The software works by sending your 40 pictures back to the Autodesk servers, which does all the heavy lifting. About
10 minutes later, your 3D image is ready, and sent back to your iPad.
Naturally, that is a lot of internet bandwidth, so be warned that it may be best to wait until you are connected to a
WiFi connection.
