Posted: 25 October 2012 1353 hrs

SINGAPORE: The sole proprietor of a company dealing in IT and computer equipment has pleaded guilty to three charges of wilful intent to evade tax.

Lau Giang Boon Eric was sentenced to eight weeks' jail and fined S$127,170 for making fictitious entries in his GST returns.

He fraudulently claimed S$42,390 in Goods and Services Tax (GST) refunds.

Two other charges were taken into account for sentencing.

The offences were carried out from 1 Apr 2007 to 31 Dec 2007.

The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore said tax evasion is a criminal offence punishable under the law and the Court imposes severe penalties for such offences.
