An unusual incident disrupted train traffic this Thursday, June 23, 2022 at Le Mans station (Sarthe).
Around 9 a.m., a man came down on the tracks. He shouted while throwing stones at the shelters for the travellers.
SNCF agents intervened to evacuate him from the tracks.
He shouted “Allahu akbar”
“We were on the platform,” says Anne, who was about to take her train to Rennes. “They stopped all the trains because a madman was on the tracks. He took gravel in his hands and threw it violently against the SNCF equipment, towards the platforms, where there were lots of people, and towards the security personnel. The police took some time to intervene.”
It took several minutes to arrest the individual.
“He was dangerous,” adds this witness to the scene. “He made a speech that we did not understand. He said “Allahu akbar.”
A BAC police officer took advantage of a moment of inattention.
“At one point, they managed to put him on the ground.”
“A man screams in a foreign language”
Loire-Atlantique Senator Joël Guerriau posted a message on Twitter.
“A man screams in a foreign language, breaks the windows of the booths with stones,” he says, “and ends up being overpowered by courageous officers.”
On the two photos he published, one of them shows an individual in the middle of the tracks, under the gaze of travelers. On the other, he is held by several agents.
Back to normal in the morning
Although material damage was observed, no one was injured.
“The staff asked us to systematically move away as soon as they moved forward,” continues Anne. “We got into position behind the metal poles. It was impressive.”
The disruption lasted about 10 minutes, causing delays. Five trains were impacted.
Traffic was able to resume as normal in the morning.
