Police officers immediately intervened to remove the offending inscription, having been ordered to do so two days earlier by the mayor of the municipality, Véronique Déchamps (Les Républicains).
That day, the “s” of the word “Islam” was replaced by the two “s” in Gothic letters of the SS (Schutzstaffel), the personal protection of Adolf Hitler and later the main criminal organization of the German Nazi regime (1933-1945).
This comparison is punishable under the offense of public incitement to hatred. An offense punishable by imprisonment of up to one year and/or a fine of up to EUR 45 000.
