Former Law Professor at NUS, Tey Tsun Hang has been ordered to pay the Attorney-General’s Chambers $14,000 for the legal expenses and fees incurred during his failed appeal to get his PR status back.
The former National University of Singapore lecturer had been charged with having sex with a student and accepting gifts from her in exchange for giving her better grades.
Even though he was acquitted of all charges, Tey Tsun Hang was still not able to get his permanent residency back, he was also not able to get his job back.
In 2013, the National University of Singapore (NUS) fired Tey when he was found guilty in the ‘sex-for-grades’ scandal but after serving his jail term, Tey appealed and had his conviction completely overturned.
After he was acquitted, Tey wanted a judicial review into his dismissal and revocation of his PR. Tey took the issue to court after he had exhausted all other means to get his job back.
However, the high court rejected Tey's application and he was refused his final chance to get his job and PR status in Singapore back.
For his attempt, he now has to pay the AGC $14,000.
