Václav Havel supports Singapore's dissident

Prague Daily Monitor, 29 Oct 2008

Prague/Singapore, Oct 27 (CTK) - Former Czech president Vaclav Havel Monday added his signature under an open letter in support of Singapore's dissident Chee Soon Juan who has been brought before court over unauthorised assembly, Jan Simral, from the Madison PA agency, has told CTK.

The letter is addressed to the Singaporean government.

Opposition leader Chee has been charged along with further 17 politicians.

Apart from Havel, the letter signatories include Polish journalist Adam Michnik and former Polish president Lech Walesa.

Chee has been convicted and imprisoned several times. If he is sentenced to prison in the current trial, it would be for the eighth time, according to the open letter.

The letter points out that the charges against Chee are at variance with Singapore's constitution that guarantees the right to assembly. It says that Singapore respects law in business affairs, but not in relation to its citizens.
