When you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing; when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors; when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you; when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice; you may know that your society is doomed." – Ayn Rand; Atlas Shrugged, 1957

Reminds me of the licensing requirement in Singapore............, whether if you are a hawker, opening a restaurant, opening a factory........

Are you kidding me! If anything, the situation in Singapore is the exact opposite.

This little island is unique in that it is one of the few places where the people expect the government to do all the hard work while they just sit back and expect to be showered with handouts and guaranteed a cushy existence without them having to lift a finger.

If it wasn't for the government playing a magnificent job of creating wealth and earning foreign exchange through its efficient network of GLCs, Singapore would be a backwater as private enterprise is virtually non existent. Singaporeans are too risk averse to step off the well beaten track. Even if they did venture slightly off course they'd need their maids to look after them along the way.

Sinkies should be extremely grateful towards their government. Without the government, their standard of living would be decidedly 3rd world.
