A man has died while another sustained injuries after being struck by lightning.
The incident happened yesterday afternoon at about 5.19pm when two friends, Chen Yuan Ying, 46, and Lian Xiang Fa, 41, were fishing in a restricted area.
The two were at Serangoon Island (previously known as Coney Island), located at one end of Lorong Halus.
It is believed that they had climbed over fences at Lorong Halus and walked to the area, which is known to be a popular fishing spot.
Chen, a former courier, had died from the lightning strike, while Lian was injured and is currently hospitalised.
The two were believed to have been hit when they took shelter from the rain under a tall tree.
An eyewitness, who was also fishing in the area with his family, said he saw a man in his 40s stretchered into an ambulance. The man was unconscious and there was a bluish tint on his body.
The Civil Defence confirmed that a call was received at 5.19pm yesterday about a man being struck by lightning at Serangoon Island.
The man was already dead when Civil Defence personnel arrived at the scene.
Another man who was not directly struck had collapsed on the ground and was suffering from muscle spasms. The injured man was immediately sent to the hospital.
Two fishing rods, fishing equipment and other personal items believed to belong to the two men were also found at the site.
