Firefighters in Ezhou, a city in central Hubei Province, have been criticized posting pictures of the rescue of a woman wearing only underpants on the lower half of her body, Chutian Times reported yesterday.

While intended as a recognition of their good work, the plan went awry when they posted her picture on a forum without blurring her face to save her embarrassment.

The woman’s predicament was embarrassing enough — she got her arm stuck in a squat toilet when she tried to grab socks that had fallen in it. Firefighters had to dismantle the toilet to get her out.

Netizens praised the rescue operation but slammed the pictures, which many considered indecent. “The woman might feel uncomfortable seeing such pictures of herself,” one commenter wrote.

After the controversy, the woman’s face in the pictures has been blurred with photographic software, the newspaper reported.
