WHEN he saw a flight stewardess who was a good friend of his missing wife, Danny Goh Peng Yeow's hopes of finding his runaway spouse rose. However, Ms Florence Chaw Li Yen, 32, was of little help, and the property consultant ended up kicking her in the back. He pleaded guilty to hurting her on Thursday and was fined $3,000 by a district court. He was also ordered to pay her $3,000 in compensation.
This was not the only punishment Goh had received. The 34-year-old was punched by Ms Chaw's boyfriend, Kelvin Xiong Jinkai soon after the incident in October 2009. For his role, Xiong, 33, was fined $2,000 in November last year.
The court heard that at about 5pm on Oct 4, 2009, Goh saw Ms Chaw at the swimming pool of the Serenity Park Condominium in Yio Chu Kang. He went over to ask her about his wife, Carrie Tan Chai Hong, who was a former flight stewardess.
About a week earlier, she had walked out on him and their three children, aged three, five and seven. Dissatisfied with her answer, he kept repeating his question more loudly each time. She warned him that he was scaring her daughters, aged four and eight. He then blamed her for his marital woes and kicked her in the back, causing her to fall.
Assistant public prosecutor Ashraf Hassan told the court Ms Chaw sought treatment at the Tan Tock Seng Hospital for tenderness of her back and was awarded five days of medical leave. However, she later complained of persistent pain and received a total of 32 days of medical leave.
Defence counsel Suresh Damodara produced photographs by private investigators showing Ms Chaw walking without difficulty and even going on a Penang holiday during her recovery.
