'Baby boom' for Singapore's military servicemen in Arizona

ANA: The call of duty for Singapore servicemen overseas appears to go beyond the military field - if one looks at the "baby boom" away from home.
Slightly more than 10 infants were born this year to families of more than 100 military serviceman stationed in the American state of Arizona.
The servicemen commonly do two-year stints there, with eight in 10 of those married bringing along loved ones.
These Singaporeans are just settling down into suburban America.
Head of the household, Felix Tan is a Singapore Air Force Military Expert stationed in Arizona.
His wife Irene left her part-time accounting job back home to join him, along with son Daniel, who is enrolled in a local community college.
Other Singaporeans in Arizona have offered lots of support to help the Tans feel at home.
The Tans arrived in Arizona in October 2011.
Felix Tan said: "They had in place a very good induction programme to lead us into the mainstream, to help us quickly settle in our basic necessities so that we can quickly focus on our job."
The Sng family, on the other hand, has been in Arizona for about two years.
Fighter pilot Felix Sng has almost completed his tour of duty.
His wife Rita has been busy looking after their three young ones since day one of the family's arrival in America.
The kids probably will miss certain things when they eventually head back to Singapore.
Royston Sng said: "What I like about this place is there's 60 days of summer, so I don't need to go to school."
Felix Sng said: "Life in Arizona is slow-paced, we can spend more time as a family together. The kids get to experience four seasons over here. We do some road trips up to the Grand Canyon. We do some dog-sledding at Flagstaff. I think this is a good experience and keeps us bonded together as a family."
The Defence Ministry says comprehensive support is given to the families of servicemen overseas. For example, there's a Chinese Language teacher from the Education Ministry there just to give Mother Tongue lessons to the children of the Sng family.
And to keep the Singaporean community close, regular meetings are organised so everyone can get together for some fun and bonding.
