Off the hook: Father urges school to hang up on smartphones

A father in Chongqing concerned that smartphones are dumbing down students has donated 400,000 yuan ($64,500) for his son’s school to issue them basic cellphones.
Liu Jiazheng (pseudonym) decided to donate the money to Chongqing Railway Middle School after finding his son was suffering from back pain, losing sleep and his eyesight due to his obsession with diddling his 2000-yuan digital sidearm.
Only after he replaced it with a phone capable only of making calls, sending text messages and logging on to chat service QQ did Liu claimed his son’s eyesight recovered and overall health improved.
Not wanting to keep the discovery to himself, Liu approached the school’s principal with a plan to provide all his classmates with similar low-tech phones.
Liu said he would tell his son of the donation after he goes to college.
