Police swooped on a suspected terror cell which had been spotted carrying out surveillance of army bases in Sydney and southern Victoria state, the daily said.
'Authorities believe the group is at an advanced stage of preparing to storm an Australian army base, using automatic weapons, as punishment for Australia's military involvement in Muslim countries,' The Australian said in its unsourced report.
'It is understood the men plan to kill as many soldiers as possible before they are themselves killed.'
The cell is believed to number 18, including Australian nationals of Somalian and Lebanese descent, the paper added. -- REUTERS
