24-hour F1 party people

By Jill Alphonso

THE biggest celebrity touted to be in town for F1 was football superstar David Beckham.

At the Paddock Club within the F1 venue last Saturday night at around 10pm, he was said to have caused a commotion as he and Spanish world No. 1 tennis star Rafael Nadal apparently turned up before being ushered into a VIP suite. The only problem: No one was able to snap a picture as evidence (darn!).

It did not help that Beckham and his wife Victoria were in New York a day earlier to launch a new perfume, Beckham Signature. So, it was either wishful thinking that Beckham was here, or it was a good lookalike who turned up.

Bollywood siren Shilpa Shetty, most famous for causing a stir in British reality show Big Brother last year, was also said to be here yesterday to cheer on the Force India team. F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone had invited her to the event, according to The Times of India.

"I love fast cars and this race is going to create history as it's the first time that we will be watching the Grand Prix at night," Shetty told The Times.

The ones seen about town were F1 drivers themselves, who visited various nightspots and events.

The parties began with a Red Bull weekend starter last Thursday night. Red Bull drivers Australian Mark Webber, Briton David Coulthard and German Sebastian Vettel made a brief appearance at the event at Siloso Beach's Cafe Del Mar.

The trio arrived to much fanfare, with the 1,500-strong crowd clustering around them to take pictures. But they stayed only 10 minutes before returning to their hotel, the Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore.

The following night, regional celebrities like Taiwanese TV host Dee Hsu, Korean star Ryo Si Won, nominated MP Eunice Olsen and MediaCorp actor Qi Yuwu showed up at Amber Lounge - Sonia Irvine's famous F1 VIP party event. There, they mingled with corporate guests.

Other hotspots were St James Power Station, which saw retired F1 driver Mika Hakkinen celebrating his 40th birthday at the clubbing complex.

Hakkinen took to the stage to cut a specially made birthday cake in front of a packed house.

He was at the club to drive home whisky label Johnnie Walker's anti-drink and drive message, part of its Join The Pact campaign for responsible drinking.

Zouk saw its share of celebrities as well, with Rahul Ghandi, the dishy son of Sonia Ghandi, turning up to party in the members' area when British DJ Carl Cox was playing at the club.

And who turned up at the exclusive party at Michel Lu's Prive last night after the races? At press time, Brazilian F1 Renault driver Nelsinho Piquet, Malaysian-born actress Michelle Yeoh and Ferrari boss Jean Todt, who is said to be her partner, had RSVPed.
