SINGAPORE: An estimated 33,793 Singaporean babies were born the year the Republic celebrated its 50th year of independence.
Senior Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, Mrs Josephine Teo, said in a Facebook post on Tuesday (Feb 2) that she is "very encouraged as the birth figures are an improvement over 2014's". There were 33,193 citizen births in 2014, according to the Singapore Department of Statistics.
As part of Singapore's Golden Jubilee celebrations, limited edition SG50 hampers were given out to families with Jubilee babies. Each hamper contained items such as a baby sling and diaper bag.
"#SG50 was a good year for marriage and parenthood," said Mrs Teo. "We have seen more Singaporeans actively participating in conversations and community initiatives to encourage others to pursue their family aspirations."
Mrs Teo also reiterated the three priority areas she raised in a Facebook post earlier this year - helping fathers play a more active role in raising their children, improving the availability of affordable quality childcare and enhancing workplace and community support for young parents.
There will be more information on these priorities shared through the hashtag #OurSGfamily on social media over the coming weeks, she added.
