China is trying to build what President Xi Jinping calls 'a new model of great power relations'. To understand how this might be the aim of Beijing's actions, we have to recognise that under his 'new model', Xi wants China to wield much more power and influence in Asia than it has for the past few centuries. These things are inherently zero-sum, so for China to have more power and influence, America must have less. This is what Xi and his colleagues are trying to achieve.

Their reasoning is simple enough. They know that America's position in Asia is built on its network of alliances and partnerships with many of China's neighbours. They believe that weakening these relationships is the easiest way to weaken US regional power. And they know that, beneath the flowery diplomatic phrases, the bedrock of these alliances and partnerships is the confidence America's Asian friends have that America is able and willing to protect them from China's power.

So the easiest way for Beijing to weaken Washington's power in Asia is to undermine this confidence. And the easiest way to do that is for Beijing to press those friends and allies hard on issues in which America's own interests are not immediately engaged – like a string of maritime disputes in which the US has no direct stake.

By using direct armed pressure in these disputes, China makes its neighbours more eager for US military support, and at the same time makes America less willing to give it, because of the clear risk of a direct US-China clash. In other words, by confronting America's friends with force, China confronts America with the choice between deserting its friends and fighting China. Beijing is betting that, faced with this choice, America will back off and leave its allies and friends unsupported. This will weaken America's alliances and partnerships, undermine US power in Asia, and enhance China's power.

In this respect, China is doing what she can do. But against America, it is not going to be easy. People have a lot to choose from America, from Coca-Cola, to Hollywood, to NBA. What is there China can offer apart from cheaper made western (or Japanese) goods? Even for non consumer goods like lifestyles, America is leading the way that even the Chinese' growing middle class is following. China has come a long way since her break from dynastic rule, and the main objective is to establish confidence in her own ways among her own people. This she has reached, the question is from here, where does she direct herself?

Cheers!

power absolutely corrupt, the powerful elite are so corrupt now with new found wealth and power, they want to more.

If you look at the trajectory of big power development, it's always economic power ➞ military power ➞ soft power projection

China is only at the beginning of stage 2: military power projection. It will take a few more decades for its soft power to ride on its economic and military prowess.

It took Japan 50 years of post-WWII rebuilding before people started accepting and adopting J-pop, sushi, Toyota, Miyake and manga.

i think chinese food is more popular than japanese.kung pao chicken has to be number one bestseller in the world.as for japanese culture im not sure why its so widely exported....but remember its only pop culture.....an industry designed for mainstream appeal like hollywood....most animes and jpop have the same template and same formulas rehashed over and over....they just take whats popular and churn out new clones.

Chinese cuisine is widely recognised as one of the world's top 2 cuisines, alongside the French. Personally I'd rank Chinese #1 for its diversity and complexity: northern (rep by Beijing), western (Sichuan), eastern (Shanghai), southern (Cantonese). (Just to be a grand dim sum chef requires 10 years of training to master the making of the dumpling skin.)

But Chinese food went to the West in the late 18th century with the large scale migration of Chinese to foreign lands. Its spread and popularity had nothing to do with China's economic revitalization starting in the '80s with Deng's kaifang policy.

It takes decades for a country, even a rich powerful country, to project its art and culture and food abroad. It was only with South Korea's ascension into developed country status in the 2 decades after the Olympics in '88 that K-pop and kimchi and Samsung became household names.

Yes. They are made in China because China is the world's factory. But they are not Chinese ideas or inventions. They simply moved the factory there because of cheaper labour, less environmental enforcement. When Chinese labour goes up, the factories will be moved somewhere cheaper. China has to come up with something new to maintain her growth and modernisation.

Cheers!

Yes. China needs a home developed brand to come onto the world stage. Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha and Kawasaki started to race internationally in the sixties and now dominate world motorcycle racing, and industry. Same thing with Song, Seiko, Panasoni...... We're still waiting for Ah Tiong brand to make its mark on the world scene. I was thinking maybe badminton rackets, but its a long way to catch up with Yonex.

Cheers!

Talk so much also no point. The 21st century is China's century.
Take it or leave it. Resistance is futile. This wave would last for 300 years, if
the world can last so long and USA would be history. China is a civilization, not
a nation. Get that.

On Chinese cuisine: the origins of Chop Suey

Chop Suey do not exist in traditional Chinese cooking. It started one night in the USA when a group of white diners entered a Chinese restaurant near to closing time. When told there was nothing available, they threatened to create a scene. The cook told this group that there was no more food. There was only "shok Sui" , referring to leftovers which they kept to feed pigs. The group did not understand and demanded that they be served with this Shok Sui. The cook did not argue further and heated up the leftovers....

The leftovers were served and to his surprise, the group enjoyed the meal so much that they wanted to know what it was called. "Shok Sui" the cook replied in his Toishan Cantonese dialect. Yeah, that's how Chop Suey originated.

This is a true story.......

If the Chinese is trying to split the USA alliance, it is fine, however no SEA nation trust the PRC,,,so the more the PRC keep up their bullying attitude, the more these nations will flock to the USA.,..right now the real bully is the PRC,,,the sort of claims they are making is crap,,next time they can claim the whole of Mudland.....

Mudland doesnt like the Yanks or the PRCs.

China has a loser mentality. They felt they been bully n look down by others for a long time.
Now they has achieved a peanut improvement.
They want do others back n show they are boss as comparable to American.
Fact is they are still a shit hole with no door.

Two things here.

Firstly, PLO is Palestine. Middle-Eastern society, they have their gripes with their neigbours there, nothing to do with Malaysia.

Secondly, they have to put on something to cover their bodies. Jeans, or pants will be suitable, they're not necessarily Levi's. What gives you the idea the PLO terrorists wear Levi's?

What's PLO hijackers got to do with China's foray into the South-China Sea?.

Cheers!

PLO terrorists hijack boeing wearing levi jeans. does wearing levi make PLO love US of A?

then wat has najib like harley has anything to do with him like US of A?

i like to eat suishi but that does not mean limpeh like nipponkia rite?

whether najib like USA or not is not important as matland need money, let face it, which nation got the most $$ now. It not USA anymore, the chinese yuan are welcome in KL. didnt u see KL govt officials go over their own heels to keep the chinese happy when mh370 went missing. many billions of tourists dollars wipeout by one flight.

The chopped H-D that Najib posed with was made by Orange County Choppers, not an MNC, but an American family business. The long-raked customized Harley epitomizes American freeway lifestyle, and is uniquely American art. I didn't say Najib (as M'sian PM represents Malaysia) likes America. I said that the Malays adore American lifestyle.

Money is money. It can come from anyhere, by any means, it is money. So Malaysia will go ga-ga over Chinese money, but between Yankee lifestyle and Ah Tiong lifestyle, which will they choose?

Cheers!
