Former Singapore Reserve Goalkeeper Eswaramoorthy Slapped With Cheating Charges
KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 (Bernama) -- A. Eswaramoorthy Pillay, a former reserve goalkeeper of Singapore's national football squad, pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here Tuesday to conspiring with a former company director to cheat and commit criminal breach of trust (CBT) to the tune of almost RM23 million.
Eswaramoorthy, 44, was allowed bail of RM1 million in one surety to be a Malaysian and was ordered to surrender his passport to the court.
His wife, a Malaysian citizen, posted bail.
Judge Rozana Ali Yusuff set July 27 for re-mention.
Eswaramoorthy is alleged to have conspired with J. Alan Rajendran, 54, a former director of construction company LFE Corporation Berhad, in misusing RM9 million of the company's funds to buy shares.
Himself a former company director, he is alleged to have committed the offence at Bursa Malaysia Depository Sdn Bhd, Level 15, Exchange Square, Bukit Kewangan here, between Jan 4 and Feb 8, 2007.
If convicted, he can be fined no less than RM1 million and jailed not more than 10 years under the Securities Industries Act 1983.
Represented by counsel Datuk K. Kumarendran, he is also alternatively charged with committing CBT for the same amount at Standard Chartered Bank Berhad in Jalan Ampang here.
Besides these, he was also charged with conspiring with Rajendran to commit CBT involving RM9.99 million also belonging to LFE Corporation Berhad at the same bank between January 11 and 16, 2007.
He also faces three additional charges of conspiring with Chin Soong Jin, 53, and Liew Kiam Woon, 57, to deceive EON Bank Berhad into releasing payments to two companies for purchases allegedly made by LFE Engineering Sdn Bhd when in fact there were none. These offences were committed between Oct 16 and 19, 2006.
The bank had released payments of RM870,000, RM1.8 million and RM1.298 million to Contour Trade Sdn Bhd and Right Meridian Sdn Bhd because of the alleged deceit.
Deputy public prosecutor Ros Mawar Rozain assisted by prosecuting officers Zul' Aida Zulkifli (rpt:Zul' Aida ) and Chong Loong Meng of the Securities Commission of Malaysia appeared for the prosecution.
